But in actuality they were struggling with carnal issues such as envy, fear, lust, hatred, jealousy, dissension and the like. John writes to this church to encourage them to keep pursuing faith, keep growing in Christ lest they grow weak and risk spiritual death. As human members of Christ's Church on Earth, we are encouraged to embrace this call of conviction as a call to action and to be AWAKE to the things of God so we can receive the richness of life that Jesus offers us as his church.
